Drug Education

• Drug Education is an integral part of the Personal Development Health & Physical Education program.
• Students participate in the Life Education program that is integrated into and supports the Drug Education lessons for each class group.
• Further training for teachers in Drug Education is a priority for the near future.

Aboriginal Education

• The Aboriginal Student Support and Parent Awareness committee meets regularly.
• Staff development has enhanced staff knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal issues and the needs of students.
• The Aboriginal Education Policy, designed to promote achievements of Aboriginal students and educate all students about Aboriginal Australia, is being developed.
• The committee support cultural awareness programs.
• Students experience Aboriginal cultural performances.

Multicultural Education

• Units of work targetted in Human Society and Its Environment developed understanding of cultural diversity and racial tolerance.
• Students in Year 5 and 6 receive comprehensive instruction in Indonesian culture and language.
• Students support CWA International Day and have enjoyed learning about other countries and sharing their knowledge and skills with community members.

Students with Disabilities

The Student Welfare Committee coordinates the support for these students. All the students are working in mainstream classes with individual education programs designed in collaboration with parents, appropriate support personnel and teaching staff. These programs are designed to encourage and facilitate full participation in all aspects of school life. With individual learning programs all students have demonstrated significant progress in literacy, numeracy and social skills.

 

Student Welfare

The Student Welfare Team reviews individual cases, allocates resources, liaises with support agencies and develops case management plans. The team designs and coordinates  programs to meet specific, identified needs of all students.
• The Student Welfare Policy promotes self-discipline, recognises positive behaviour and provides consequences for inappropriate behaviour.
• Whole school Social Skills and Peer Support programs develop self-esteem, communication, leadership and social skills, friendships, tolerance and conflict resolution skills, plus it promotes responsible behaviour.
• Regular assemblies for parents are presented by students to celebrate their achievements and practice the skills learnt in the Social Skills program.
• An anti-bullying program has been implemented to assist students to recognise harassment and to empower them to deal appropriately with problems.
• The “Care and Supervision Policy” has been reviewed to enhance supervision for students. This policy is designed to ensure the protection, safety and welfare of all students and staff.
• Buddy classes across, and within, stages promote self esteem and leadership skills.
• The Kindergarten Orientation Program has been enhanced this year and has received many positive feedback from parents.
• Liaison with Early Intervention Programs and preschools have supported “at risk” students. Special transition programs have been organised, where applicable, to assist these students adapt to school.
• “Gold Awards” for playground behaviour and additional special Achievement Awards have been introduced to further celebrate student achievement.
• Forty-eight students have participated in the Seasons program in 2000. The program assists students to cope with loss of a close family member through illness or death, and divorce or separation.
